Globys Presents at AppsXchange Asia on ‘The Key to Differentiating the Operator App Store’

AppsXchange Asia, now in its 2nd year, is designed to give a complete understanding of how to capitalize on the exploding app market. The event was attended by over 140 delegates from mobile operators, application developers, content owners and solution providers from Asia, Europe and the US.
“The big question at the conference was “should they or shouldn’t they” with respect to operators launching their own apps stores. Half the operators that spoke have launched or plan to launch an app store while half were not going to launch one and instead support the stores of the platform providers such as Apple, Google, RIM, and Nokia,” said Edwards. “Operators realize the importance of apps to their data revenue growth and retention strategies and it seems that operators helping with the discovery of apps and other content outside their walled gardens is an emerging trend.”
Praveen Ragan, Head of Mobile Internet at DiGi Telecommunications in Malaysia, presented results of a survey of their iPhone customers that had not downloaded any apps in their first 30 days. Of those, 45% “didn’t know what to download” and 40% felt there were “too many choices” (the remaining 15% were “not interested”).
“Operators that can successfully direct their customers to relevant apps and other content will indeed benefit from growth in data revenues and increased customer loyalty,” said Edwards. “And given their unique customer data assets, they are absolutely in a position to provide recommendations to customers that the app stores can’t do as effectively.”
